I’m trying to remember the last time I traveled with another woman, sans my son. My son has been my traveling companion for many years, or I’ve journeyed with a boyfriend/husband … or alone. I’m rooming with my friend, Lori, a fellow writer and friend from the weekly writers critique group. It’s just a different dynamic – no Cartoon Network or fighting for desk space (my son and I each have our own laptops) – and lots of casual conversation. Girl talk.
We are on the cusp of the writers’ conference, an intense three days with few breaks by the looks of it. It’s very exciting to think of being with so many writers, talking to agents, learning how to improve our craft. This thing I do, called writing, fills so many parts of my life. My days usually consist of habitual conversations in my head or snippets of descriptions. I automatically look around a room and store the details for future use. Overheard conversations emerge months or years later from fictional mouths. All of that will be brought to the forefront for three days – for all of us.
Earlier this year I wrote a list of action steps to take toward achieving important goals. Registering for a writers’ conference was one of those steps toward publishing my book as well as becoming a better writer. No longer content to dream of being better, I decided to do everything possible in that direction.
Every day is an opportunity to take a few action steps toward achieving what’s important. It’s a gift of time and it’s up to us to open the box. Unlike most gifts, what’s inside the box is up to us. What else do we have in our lives with so many options? I won’t be at a writers’ conference every day, but I need to remember that I have an opportunity to create something beautiful from the twenty-four hours I’ve been given. You have that opportunity as well. Let’s open our gifts and choose wisely.
