What do you see when you look in the mirror? Imagine you’re Michelangelo. He saw potential. His finished statue of David stands fourteen feet and three inches tall. The original piece of marble stone had to be so much larger. History also tells us that Michelangelo began with a piece of flawed stone another artist had rejected. The masterpiece, David, therefore began as an idea in one man’s mind when he looked at an enormous stone.

The sculpture process, basically three stages that end with polishing, begins violently. Michelangelo would have started by knocking off large portions of stone with a chisel and mallet – nothing fancy, just working to get a very general shape. Don’t get me wrong. I’m certain that if I tried this, even the first stage would not be artistic. The second stage is refining the shape using a toothed chisel or claw chisel. The refining process reveals the final shape, although not yet complete. Enhancing is the third stage, achieved by shaping with rasps and riffles. Polishing the sculpture is the final step.

Marble’s surface translucency is comparable to human skin.

But we don’t need to be sculptors to view ourselves as masterpieces. Perhaps we aren’t in our final, polished form yet. The first violent stage of knocking off large portions of stone can mirror the metamorphosis achieved by those who take off a great deal of weight. Once we are in the neighborhood of our target weight, the refining stage kicks in. Our exercising pays off – we see more definition, fewer bulges. Keeping the final masterpiece in mind, we stick with it through the enhancing process – working on those last problem areas, perhaps, or winning the battle with the final few pounds.

What is polishing? Whatever you want it to be! Very likely, polishing will include a new wardrobe as your old styles not only don’t fit, but wouldn’t look good even if they did fit. A new body often demands new shapes. Maybe you want a new hairstyle or a day at the spa complete with facial, manicure and pedicure. How about a new bicycle or kayak, rollerblades or cross-country skis?

As part of my e84 challenge, I have tools that act as chisel, mallet, rasp and riffle. From a weight management standpoint, my evolv™ appetite control products allow me to eat what I want when I’m hungry yet turn away from mindless snacking and/or overeating. My personalized ExerSciz™ fitness program works with my schedule and favorite activities. No matter what shape any of us are in, these tools will go to work to create a new masterpiece.

So the next time you look in the mirror, see more than just your reflection. Look at yourself the way an artist looks at stone , seeing the potential of beauty. Be a Michelangelo. Be the marble.
