So often we wake to a new day with the burdens of yesterday still on our minds. It’s tough, if not impossible, to leap out of bed with a heavy yoke anchoring us in the past. The errors and mistakes of yesterday are gone. Yes, the consequences may be staring us in the face, but without a fresh start, nothing will change.
Turning over a new leaf means to make a fresh start, along with the implication that the new start will bring positive change. Webster’s defines “turn over a new leaf” as “to make a radical change, especially for the better, in one’s way of living or doing.” But without the daily commitment to start fresh and leave yesterday’s mistakes in the past, the new “leaf” will have as much impact as stale New Year’s Resolutions.
A leaf used to refer to any flat sheet of paper, and in the days before the printing press, manuscripts had to be copied by hand. Our daily lives deserve this much care, taking a fresh page and creating a manuscript that is beautiful and without error. Sometimes our errors can be corrected or ignored – after all, we do not seek perfection, only progress. But some days, and even lifetimes, become pages full of errors, too many to ignore and impossible to correct. Bad habits, wrong decisions, impatient words, neglected love. Don’t stare at the ink-stains, the blots and splatters.
Turn the page. Turn over a new leaf. Every morning is a blank leaf, fresh and waiting for our ink. It’s up to us to take a little more time, perhaps altering the way we hold the pen, the speed of our writing. Maybe we just tried to get too many words on the page, or didn’t let the ink dry, our impatience smearing a black stain across the clean surface.
It’s important to note that we aren’t encouraged to destroy the old pages. Why not? Even with the worst days, the ugliness, fear, pain, those days can instruct us tomorrow. We’ve seen where we’ve been and we can contemplate how to be somewhere new today. We can use today to write the directions to where we’re going tomorrow.
Is today not exactly what you’d hoped? Start fresh now. Don’t wait to get to the bottom of the page. Two minutes ago – that’s the past. Now – this moment is poised to become the future and the past. Make it count.
Turning over a new leaf to better health was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. If not for evolv™ products and deciding to take the e84 challenge, I’d still be staring at an old ink-stained page full of frustration, wondering why regular exercise and good intentions weren’t getting me anywhere.
Today, leave your past behind and start out fresh. Take the e84 challenge at www.sharonhayward.myevolv.com, or call me at 616-450-8531 and I’ll tell you how it worked for me. Don’t just take my word for it – you can also call Joe Manzanares at 303-923-8061 or www.drinkevolvtoday.com .
