I’ve learned over and over that the biggest wins don’t come from massive leaps—they come from small, consistent steps. And one of the most powerful tools I’ve discovered for creating momentum is the simple idea of committing to 3 things.
Last year, I was part of a coaching group and also had a weekly phone call with my mentor. Each week, we’d commit to three things we planned to do. That weekly accountability kept me focused, and it gave me a sense of accomplishment as I checked those items off.
I also joined the #75hard challenge in July 2022, which eventually grew into a full-year program. Part of it was a daily “power list” of 3 tasks. These weren’t big goals—they were small, doable steps that often cleared bottlenecks and unlocked progress.
Think about it:
- Dishes piled in the sink simply because the dishwasher needed emptying.
- Laundry waiting by the washer because the dryer wasn’t cleared yet.
- An overdue email blocking an entire project at work.
These may seem simple, but they’re the kinds of bottlenecks that slow us down more than we realize.
Why Mentorship Matters
I really appreciate having a coaching program or a mentor on a regular basis. The support, accountability, and new perspectives are invaluable. Often, a mentor helps you see things differently—and reminds you that it’s not about tackling huge projects at once, but identifying the very next step.
And that’s where I noticed I had to make a shift. With the “3 things” method, I sometimes chose items that were actually projects in themselves. No wonder I felt frustrated and stuck. Once I learned to scale back and focus on the next small step, the results started to flow.
Finding Your Rhythm
It may take a few tries to find your rhythm with a daily or weekly list of 3 things. But once you do, you’ll feel powerful. You’ll build momentum. And momentum leads to real, lasting change—whether that’s in your career or in your everyday life.
So here’s my challenge for you:
👉 Create your own list of 3. Either a weekly commitment or a daily power list. Keep it small, doable, and focused.
You might be surprised at how much you can accomplish.
